On the day when Vergel returns from the mines, turmoil comes to the lives of his little brothers and his sister. They were doing very well thank you, living quietly without parents in the beautiful countryside of the Philippines, which with its sloping hills and rice paddies seemed to have an abundance of agricultural wealth. The feverish and desperate quest for raw materials interferes with the freedom and education of the young children in the countryside. Vergel’s sense of honour and concern for his naughty little brother and infatuated big sister turns into intolerant greed when he finds gold on his land. Will things work out in the end? Ramon de Guzman’s (1971) Stone is the Earth forms part of his ‘Earth’ trilogy. The film was supported by the Hubert Bals Fund.
