With her latest film, Larisa Sadilova stays true to her creative principles: reflecting on the life and soul of ordinary people in the Russian provinces. Sonny is a contemporary psychological drama based on her own script, as is customary for her. The film focuses on the father-son relation in this unusual single parent family (the mother left when the boy was still little). The father (played by the excellent Viktor Sukhorukov) cares for his only teenage son with extraordinary intensity and passion, which results in the son feeling suffocated. Trying to free himself from home, Andrei finds escape amongst his teenage friends and, above all, with a new girl who is hitch-hiking through the country. Andrei disappears with her, and then the drama turns into a detective plot: a business man is found dead, while his car is being used by the two young adventurers….
