Surprising debut film by the American fashion designer Tom Ford, who established his name in the mid-1990s as creative director at the fashion house of Gucci, which made a comeback thanks to his efforts. A Single Man is also the first film made by Fade to Black, the production company founded by Ford. It’s a film version of the novel from 1964 by Christopher Isherwood, about a day in the life of George, a middle-aged Englishman in California who is mourning the loss of his partner Jim, with whom he has been together for 16 years. Jim died in a car crash. Eight months later, it is still unbearable for George. Ford, who wrote the screenplay with David Scearce, has made a stylish, sensitive and occasionally even humorous film with a striking leading role for Colin Firth, who was given the best actor award at the Venice Film Festival.
