What on Earth Have I Done Wrong?!

Niu Chen-zer started as an actor; at the age of nine he played his first role and as a teenager he acted in a film by Hou Hsiao-hsien and many films were to follow. As a director, he made television dramas and series, but he dreamed of making a real film. This film is about that stubborn dream.
The film is a mockumentary about a film maker who surreptitiously collects money to make a mockumentary. The story is of course about Doze himself, who also plays the lead. A mockumentary, a fake documentary, is basically always a comedy, but this one also has some grimmer sides. Doze searches diligently for extra money for his film and this brings him into contact with dubious businessmen, corrupt politicians and other opportunists. The distinction between a film maker, a politician, a gangster and a pimp is occasionally difficult to draw.
Doze does not spare himself. With rough self-mockery, he portrays himself as an unreliable bastard who does not stop at lies, adultery and embezzlement in order to make his first real film, the one he has always dreamed of. It’s obvious he succeeded in this: the viewer is watching the result. This film, self-assured in its shooting and convincing in its acting, sketches a striking picture of the seamier side of film making. The side where the end justifies all means. (GjZ)
