Meet the Maestro: Meet the Coen Brothers
Every year, the four-year South-Holland project Meet the Maestro takes a look at the oeuvre and the motives of a renowned film maker. This third edition of Meet the Maestro is unique, because this time it focuses on two film makers: the Coen Brothers.
Joel (1954) and Ethan (1957) Coen both grew up in Minneapolis. Since their stunning début Blood Simple, they have formed the vanguard of American independent cinema. Their preference for film noir and screwball comedies is clear from their idiosyncratic oeuvre, full of black humour, dry dialogues and surrealist violence. Their latest film, No Country for Old Men, will be premièred at this years festival.
Meet the Maestro is a collaborative project between the IFFR, the film theatres in South-Holland and Kunstgebouw, commissioned by the Province of South-Holland. In addition to the film, South-Holland schools are taking part with an educational project for school pupils and two film makers (Edwin and Sietske Tjallingii) have made a short film, commissioned by the IFFR, inspired by the work of the Coen Brothers.
