In a small village somewhere on Majorca, Hans, a German odd jobs man, reports for work for an affluent fellow countryman. His predecessor’s name was also Hans. An indefinable atmosphere seems to cling to his memory. When the new, vulnerable Hans finds this out, he becomes entangled in a web filled with intangible fake truths.
This lays the foundation for a compelling and ominous story. Soon after his arrival, a number of certainties start shifting and Hans feels guilty for something he didn’t do. When he tries to exonerate himself, he comes closer and closer to the truth, but paradoxically enough he becomes further and further removed from his own identity.
Deception and the unknowable true nature of our identity are placed in frightening yet significant contrast with our modern society, in which a manipulable yet self-assured presentation of ourselves has become public property. Yo is about the contours of our identity and the narrow line between ourselves and the other. The film questions our own credibility and the difference between what happens and what we think happens. Rafa Cortés wrote the script with the protagonist Alex Brendemühl for his feature debut. This may be one of the reasons why Brendemühl’s role fits him like a glove. (SdH)
