After the attacks on 9/11 in New York and Washington, it became known that three of the four suicide terrorists who had flown the plane had been regular visitors to the Al-Quds Mosque in Hamburg. At the time it was not known what exactly was going on in this mosque. Until videotapes turned up that had been shot by an anonymous camera owner inside the mosque. They were shots of meetings with Mohammed Fazazi.
In the late 1990s, Fazazi became imam of the Al-Quds Mosque. In January 2000, at the end of Ramadan, he held several lectures in the prayer room of the mosque. During these gatherings, and as an exception, those present were allowed to ask him direct questions about faith and life. The imam returned to Morocco in 2001. Hamburger Lektionen is a literal translation of these images, not shortened in any way. The actor Manfred Zapatka recites the texts - including footnotes - from a bar stool, without subjective interpretations or staging. The recitation is static yet provides a unique opportunity to get to know the possible influence of this imam on the course of world history. (PvH)
