This gangster film is a sequel that is more than a repetition of the success of the original: the themes in part one are developed here and the story is brought to an ending. In addition, the film does not anticipate a possible third part.
In Election 2 , the complex and corrupt election process in a triad is buried. There wasn’t much to elect in crooked Hong Kong, but after this film the violent charade is also put to rest.
Election 2 is set two years after Election. It is again time to choose a new chairman. The winning chairman of part one has done well, but gangster rules demand a new one. Re-election is not possible - and that is precisely the cause of the battle here in part two.
To replaces the heroic romanticism characteristic of so many gangster films with a convincing cold-bloodedness and calculation. Justice and affection only get in the way. To brings this world to life with icy craftsmanship: more than in any other gangster film, the story is set in a real world, the real Hong Kong, which makes the film irresistibly convincing. (GjZ)
