Once a high-class tourist paradise, now a second-rate destination for cheap all-in holidays: a rundown Acapulco, in which three different love stories are set on one and the same evening. The young Fernanda is overwhelmed by her ex-boyfriend and soon gives up the fight. When her present love hears about this, he tries his best to get her back. 50-year-old Jaime, a disillusioned man who has withdrawn to a quiet spot after his employer was robbed, considers suicide until he meets the vivacious Tigrillo. She changes his mind.
Effusive camerawork that also remains restricted within carefully considered visual compositions gives the acting achievements of the largely non-professional cast a gripping directness. Naranjo ingenuously interweaves the brief yet fierce developments within the three intense relationships in a complex and inventive narrative structure. Each episode takes a leap back in time at a certain point, after which the following story takes over. The events are portrayed from different perspectives, as a result of which the emotions of all the characters acquire a great urgency. In this cinematographic relay race, the director also gives the classic themes of love and despair an unexpected compassion. (SdH)
