Not all hallucinogenic film is intended for the cinema. There is a widespread tradition of visual shows that are primarily set in clubs and concert halls. In order to show some of this, Taiwanese VJ Sunny Hu has been invited to provide a programme adapted to the theme of White Light. In her work, Hu strives for a close, almost trance-like interaction with her audience. She compares the experience she wants to evoke with the so-called high of a heroin user. Alongside the images she makes herself, she also uses images from the work of several young Taiwanese film makers such as Wi Ding Ho and Chi-Jan Hou. In this way, she shows images from Respire by Wi Ding Ho, a short film that will also be shown in its entirety during the festival. In the images, which she strips of any story, she is looking for an enlarged moment of emotion, such as can be seen in a single blink by an actress. The musical basis for the performance will be formed by music made by film composer and DJ Lim Giong. Lim composed music for Three Times, the latest film by Hou Hsiao-hsien (that can also be seen at the festival). Lim has also worked as an actor on several films by Hou Hsiao-hsien. (GjZ)
