The Schmelzdahin Collective (Jochen Lempert, Jürgen Reble and Jochen Müller) from Bonn was very active in the period 1983-1989. Their no-nonsense approach to film material is still appealing. Films were buried, drowned or hung in a tree to allow the elements to do their work: In their vision, this is a purifying effect, as a result of which the film acquires a new reality that replaces the original, coloured illusion.
