A collection of short to very short films, which moves back and forth between the psychedelic and the surrealistic, put together for the occasion by the maker John Price. The films are all developed by hand and manipulated chemically. The visual effects are intended to evoke trance-like experiences comparable with the effects of using drugs. The longest film in the programme is Making Pictures. A black & white film in which a rain of emulsion grain makes it possible to follow the shots made by another film maker (Peter Mettler, director of the film Gambling, Gods and LSD, quite apt in this context) in turn made of a landscape photographer in China. A film about watching and being watched. The short film Fire #3 is mesmerising like the proverbial moth and lamp. John Price will then show a series of reels of hand-developed colour material. The chemical processing is at least as important as the scenes filmed; scenes that cannot often be recognised as realistic, because they have been dissolved in a hallucinogenic cloud of colour. The underlying shots are often the home-movie-like films that Price shot in various places over the years. The films then acquired their final form in the darkroom and not as usual during the editing. The films are all without sound. During his performances, Price improvises a musical accompaniment. The programme will be preceded by the short film Color Writing Me Out by Christelle Gualdi, who contacted the festival after reading the web-log about John Price. (GjZ)
