Valie Export is a performance artist who, in the sixties and seventies, initiated the interactive media of today. She belongs to a tradition of feminist artists who react against the way women are being represented in the media. Export wants to bring her viewers back in touch with the reality behind the increasing overload of images. When talking about digital media, one should never forget about the body. In The Power of Speech, Export depicts a larynx in action. The effect of abstraction through a close-up and the multiplication of the image add a suggestive dimension to the medical coolness of the image.
