Under Fire is a project that investigates the organisation and representation of contemporary armed conflicts. It stresses the role of the image as media for symbolic meaning and manipulator of sentiments. It introduces depictions borrowed from commercial and independent news media, alongside images from the artistic, literary and popular culture of the West and the Middle East. Under Fire is made up of a series of organised online and live discussions that will take place throughout the year 2004 and be communicated through the Web. The project is focusing on to deeper underlying `truth' that images can reveal or hide. The first online discussion is on 24 Jan 2004 at 5:30 p.m. Participants will include Asef Bayat, Susan Buck-Morss, Hamid Dabashi en Gema Martín Muñoz. Venue: www.wdw.nl and in the Work in Transit space in Witte de With.
