This lyrical film was a major success in Czechoslovakia and its first 'Roma' feature (over half a million Roma live in Slovakia today). The director was inspired by people and episodes from real life and then spent some time in Roma settlements. The simple coming of age story focuses on two adolescent protagonists, Jakub and Jolanka, and their developing feelings. But even if the relationship between a gadjo and a beautiful Gypsy girl may be a popular romantic plot, in reality such a relationship faces prejudice and is seen as unacceptable.
