This is a classic masterpiece by the Moldavian director Emil Loteanu. The film is set in the Bessarabian region and was based on Maxim Gorky's stories Makar Chudra and Starukha Isergil. It is regarded by many as one of the most beautiful films ever made about the Roma and tells the fatal love story between the two liberated Roma lovers, the beautiful independent Rada and the handsome horse thief Zobar. The film was a box-office hit, both in the Soviet Union and in the former countries of Eastern Europe. Not only thanks to the realistic portrayal of the Gypsies, but also to the original Gypsies songs that fill the film.
