One of Julien’s most fully achieved documentaries which ably interweaves interviews, dramatic reconstruction and archive material, ‘Fanon’ is a study of the life and work of the highly influential anti-colonialist writer Franz Fanon, author of ‘The Wretched of the Earth’. In its exploration of Fanon’s professional life as a psychiatric doctor in Algeria during its war of independence with France, the insights offered into the psychological toll of violent occupation and resistance is as relevant now as it was then. Made in collaboration with producer Mark Nash, ‘Fanon’ is an illuminating biographical portrait of a central figure in Third World nationalism which manages to deliver both a sense of the man as well as the force of his ideas. This work is also shown at the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum.
