Shrink2b.demos consists of two video projections with one musical soundtrack. The video and sound elements of the installation will have a running time of approximately 11 minutes. The project takes a structuralist visual approach, and is an excerpt from a feature-length work-in-progress. The imagery consist of two projections of the Manhattan skyline as seen from a slowly moving boat. The moving images will be overlaid with short texts (Walter Benjamin, Alian Badiou). The writing references aspects of contemporary urban life (in this version, the myth of progress, and the return of "evil" to the modern political landscape...). The only sound in the work will be 2 songs from the cd 'Shrink' (1998) by the bavarian experimental pop groud The Notwist which mix tropes from rock, jazz, and electronica. In each song / section, the two images will be similar, the same location as seen before and after the destruction of the World Trade Center.
Tony Cokes' videos and installations are a reflection on the history and ideological implications of the image and these days also of pop music.
