La cage is about memories, about what and how it was, how it could have been, about leaving things behind and forgetting and maybe forgiving. Caroline Ducey (the leading lady from Catherine Breillat's Romance) plays the magnificent, almost silent role of Anne Verrier (25), who has spent seven years in jail for a robbery and murder she committed as a minor. Ducey is in just about every shot of the film unless the camera is pointing at the grand landscape.Anne has now been free for a year and has to rediscover her place in society. She goes to visit her parents and then embarks on a long hike to Col d'Allos. Her first aim is to find Jacques Delieu, the father of the man she murdered. Raoust shows Anne's quest and final confrontation with this man as an impossible task, a wait for an acrimonious duel. With his controlled style, Raoust won the FIPRESCI prize at the festival of Locarno. He succeeded in giving every landscape a meaning: from the anonymity of the city and the peace of the parental home, to the barren mountain slopes of the ski areas of the Southern French Alps.
