The lives of Julio and Tenoch, like most seventeen-year-old-boys, are shaped by hormones, friendship and their headlong rush into adulthood. The two friends encounter a 28-year-old woman and invite her on a trip to ‘paradise’ on earth, the most beautiful beach Boca del Cielo (heaven’s mouth). They just don’t know where exactly that is. Love, jealousy, friendship, adulthood, everything is questioned in the journey of this unusual trio.Maribel Verdu delivers a very strong performance has a vulnerable woman driven by a hidden urgency. The Mexican-born and New York-based Cuarón says of his fourth feature film: ‘We tried to observe the social context in as much detail as the observation of the characters’ behaviour.’The film had the biggest opening for a Mexican film and it broke all box office records for a national film. Pop songs on the soundtrack are also contributing to the great success of this humorous road teen story. Cuarón: ‘This is an interesting moment in Mexican cinema, with new film-makers, different and new ways of financing, new theatres and a new audience that has delivered a vote of confidence in Mexican production. Now, it’s up to us.’
