A fake documentary about a young actress of whom the film-maker in the film, played by film-maker Griffin Dunne himself, suspects that she could become famous at any moment. The film-maker wants to catch the process of fame in its early stages. So the budding actress Lisa Picard (played by co-writer Laura Kirk) makes many entertaining attempts to break through, but fails miserably. A friend, Tate Kelley (played by the other writer, Nat DeWolf), also has aspirations to be an actor, but these are not taken seriously by Lisa, because the world only revolves around her. Yet it is Tatewho has a minor success with a toe-curling coming-out one-man play, while Lisa hasn't got any further than an erotic porridge commercial that awakens the anger of a bourgeois audience.Lisa Picard is Famous is a feature about making a documentary, comprising fragments that really are documentary, such as an interview with Kit Carson, whose notorious David Holzman's Diaries was an example for many fake diaries about the media world. Novice writers Kirk and DeWolf based their story about the young nameless actor who drags himself from one humiliating audition to the next on their own experiences trying to get an acting job in New York. That ensures that the film, despite its satirical and humorous approach, makes a very authentic impression.
