Motivation for this film was the invitation by the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum to Sokurov to look at a work of art from the collection like a nightwatchman in a deserted museum. In addition to Breughel's painting 'The Tower of Babel', Sokurov also examines many other historic paintings. The video starts as a road movie and follows the trail from Russia to Rotterdam. Visual poetry and philosophical meditations ensure a very special pictorial experience. Also to be seen on a plasma screen in the museum.
