Daguerre discovered the potential of photography when he accidentally spilt some drops of mercury from a broken thermometer. Several years later, the first daguerrotypists displayed signs of mercury poisoning: irritation, insomnia and 'childish over-emotionality' - the same symptoms as of a broken heart. So science - like film (and love) - evokes magic transformations that are each tragedies.
