Cargo
Last summer, Laura Waddington spent a month making an adventurous trip on a container vessel that visited several harbours in the Near East from Venice. The ship sailed under different flags with a poorly paid crew of Rumanians, Poles and Filipinos. The men were not allowed off the ship and killed their time with karaoke or by telling the film-maker stories in a small television room. Waddington was not allowed to film the harbours, but she did anyway, hidden behind a porthole: in this way she collected pictures of men stealing the cargo and soldiers fishing off a half-submerged submarine. She shot a lot of material (about 60 hours) and selected the most abstract images for the final work. (GjZ)Laura Waddington (1970, London) left in 1991 for New York where she made short films and videos. She now lives in Paris.
