Paradise in the City is about the experiences of the countless country Chinese who settled in the big city in search of happiness and money. Dasheng works in the city as a window cleaner of the shiny skyscrapers that are shooting up all over. He has dug up a pair of substitute parents and a girlfriend. In his home village, he has a different mother and wife. They hope he will come home as soon as possible. But Dasheng likes city life, even if it is very uncertain. A trivial incident could cost him his job... Suddenly his city parents don't get in touch any more and his girlfriend becomes alienated from him. Back in the village things are also going wrong. His mother comes looking for him in the enormous city, but gets lost. Dasheng's wife goes looking for her. What should Dasheng do? The transition from an agricultural to an industrial society in China in recent years has great consequences for the country. Like all Chinese, the characters in Paradise in the City are influenced by these often chaotic changes and by the contrasts between a hell they fled and an impossible paradise. But unlike most Chinese films, Paradise in the City bridges the gap between town and country, between young people and the older generation.
