Beautiful People

Beautiful People is a comedy set in London at the time of the Bosnian civil war in 1993 and during the soccer international between England and Holland - which was a much more important event for most people in London at the time. After a Bosnian and a Croatian from the same village come to blows in a London bus, the film follows several 'ordinary' British families who are confronted with the war in their own way. These very different people come into contact with each other by chance. Their point of contact is the war in Bosnia, that once seemed so far away. For instance, Griffin Midge and his way-out friends get in the wrong plane and find themselves in the idle of the misery of war. In hospital the overworked doctor Mouldy comes in contact with a young couple from former Yugoslavia. The girl is pregnant as a result of a brutal rape. The marriage of Kate and Gerry is on the rocks after Gerry finds out he has to go to Bosnia as a reporter. The chaos and confusion in which the British families find themselves however leads to an unexpected and harmonious end. Everyone emerges chastened from the battle. Life in London is not that bad after all. The young director Jasmin Dizdar is from Bosnia and has lived since 1989 in the UK. With Beautiful People he made a very strong début as a feature director.
