During the festival the first feature by the British film-maker John Maybury will be screened, Love is the Devil, based on the life of the painter Francis Bacon. Maybury is best known for his experimental, homo-erotic, visually and musically extravagant short video films such as Maledicta Electronica and Remembrance of Things Fast. His work has often been compared with that of Derek Jarman, who has been a great source of inspiration for Maybury. Themes such as sado-masochism, obsessions and sexuality are well represented in Maybury's work. The installation Read Only Memory provides a survey of his oeuvre. Twenty years of archive material passes on an enormous screen in a collage made especially for this installation. For those who do not know his work, the installation probably provides a shocking first acquaintance, for Maybury-lovers it will offer a new way to enjoy it.
