The end of the world is called Patagonia, in the deep South of Argentina: a place unfriendly to humans, ruled by an unremitting and stormy wind, which is nevertheless filled with myths. Valdivia looks after himself and his need for drink with all kinds of odd jobs and petty crime. He is about to steal a car when he is surprised by the female owner. A strange relationship develops with this woman, a swimming teacher who works in a bar at night. Valdivia, who is used to failure, dreams of a golden sheep that he has lost, some way or another. Then he receives a call from the mysterious señor Ramenfort, who orders him to go looking for such a sheep. Thisis the start of Valdivia's journey to nowhere. His quest, independent of the whys and wherefores, seems to have become the only meaningful element in his life.
