In the not too distant future one billion immigrants – legal and illegal – will live in the United States. To preserve the American Way of Life, Farley (Beau Bridges), the governor of Idaho, closes the borders of his state to immigrants. The president, who receives whispered advice from his all-powerful public-relations guru Jack Buchan (James Coburn), gives Farley an ultimatum to open the borders again: 67 and a half hours (not the planned 72, because he doesn’t want to miss the last broadcast of his beloved soap series All My Children). The crisis escalates when Farley calls on the state troopers to set up a military blockade. Soon various ethnic groups try to cordon off their own areas, such as the Sioux, the Crisps, the Bloods, the Irish, the Spanish, the Sikhs, etc. Montana and Utah mobilise their troops. The country is close to civil war. The international news station NewsNet rushes in.
