In pre-war Rotterdam, the bailiff Dreverhaven rules over his kingdom as a tyrant. His son Katadreuffe, ambitious, eager to learn and as stubborn as his father, decides to become a lawyer. Mike van Diem's dramatic début based on Bordewijk's classic novel was selected for Cannes in 1997 and is the Dutch entry for the 1998 foreign language Oscar.
