A film about the living and working conditions of workers in the Peugeot factories at Sochaux. Professional film-makers were involved in making the film, for instance cameraman Bruno Muel, but the aim was for the workers to portray their own lives and work. This approach was a reaction to earlier so-called militant films made by the Medvedkine group in which film-makers such as Mario Marret and Chris. Marker had the last word. When the workers failed to recognise themselves in the film, Marker in particular concluded that only workers could record the existence of workers. Alongside documentary footage, the film also includes acted scenes (with actors of the 'Théâtre des Habitants') to reconstruct certain events.
