Terra estrangeira is about a generation in crisis, in a country that is uncertain about its own identity. Brazil 1990: Fernando Collor, the first elected president after almost thirty years of military dictatorship, is invested and makes a scandalous economic proposal: to seize all savings accounts in Brazil. The country finds itself in a huge chaos and more than 800,000 young Brazilians leave the country in the next few years, in search of better chances. Against this background we see the young Paco, son of a Spanish immigrant who lives in a decadent area of Sao Paolo, and Alex, a young Brazilian woman who has emigrated to Lisbon and has to learn the harsh lessons of life in another country. Racism, cultural inequalities between the South and the North and the universal despair of a whole generation are the underlying themes in the film.
