Just as in Twist à Popinguine, screened last year at Rotterdam, is also dominated by the director’s loving, ironic view of the characters in his film. Daouda, the local bus driver, oversleeps one morning and wakes to see a scene dear to him: his family at breakfast. One of his wives is washing and another is taking care of one of the babies. Once he sets off, Daouda sings cheerfully (‘God is good, that’s for sure, but take good care of yourself too’) while his son helps the passengers. And what a bunch of passengers today! Such a pity that the bus breaks down and makes the journey worse than usual. In Sene Absa shows how the African character differs fundamentally from the Western.
