A Ukrainian coal miner and his grandson struggle with the loss of the boy's parents in World War II by designing a city for the dead together. In 1989 the film-maker was part of a documentary crew that spent a month in Donetsk, interviewing retired coal miners who lived through the war years. This film is inspired by their stories and dedicated to the writer Italo Calvino.
