The genre of this film, based on short stories by Franz Kafka, could be characterised as 'documentary from an imaginary world'. And in this world, that exists within a gigantic theatre, live a unique collection of people and children who take great pleasure in a penetrating beeping noise, reminiscent of the sound of mice. There are also wild nomads who superficially make a great impression but in the end are indifferent to the local people. The nomads have set up their camp in the courtyard of the theatre, in the light of a smoky campfire. Then there is the local diva Josephine, who charms the inhabitants of the theatre with the high 'coloratura' of her squeaking, the young Joseph, the only one who does not share the general enthusiasm for Josephine's singing, the philosopher smart ass Jeremiah and the cynical Joshua.
