Despite great poverty, a tenant farmer, his wife and their young son are relatively happy, until their quiet life is disrupted by the arrival of a timber merchant from the city. The truck driver who transports the timber makes friends with the family and helps them set up a small shop. The venture fails and their hope of a better life ends in tragedy.
