The Dubini brothers had the gall to complete with none other than Luchino Visconti, by allowing Helmut Berger to play the role of the eccentric King Ludwig II of Bavaria again twenty years later. In the summer of 1881 Ludwig made a journey with the actor Joseph Kainz on and around the Vierwaldstättersee. Ludwig wants to have the text of Schiller's play William Tell recited against the background of its historic locations. Paradoxically he has the natural locations changed on the spot to give them a theatrical atmosphere. The film revolves around the relationship between Ludwig and the actor he hires, who is not inspired enough for Ludwig.
