The germ of this film was screened in 1994 at Rotterdam in the form of the short film Flirt, that was more or less the start of an eccentric trilogy of the same name telling three variations on the same story. New York, February 1993. Emily, girlfriend of Bill, a good- hearted but spoilt kid, leaves for three months to go to Paris and sets her boyfriend an ultimatum: marry or split up. Bill has to give Emily an answer within a few hours, so he quickly runs through all the other potential romances in his life. In the end he is accidentally shot in the face and loses his girlfriend in Paris to another man. Berlin, September 1994. Dwight, a precocious young American, lives with Johan, an elderly German. Johan is going to New York for three months on business. Before he leaves, he wants to know whether their relationship has any future. Dwight tries to have an affair with another man, as an alternative for Johan, however he is shot in the face by the other man's wife and is left penniless and homeless in Berlin. Tokyo, March 1995. It isn't her fault when Miho, a butoh dance student, is regarded by everyone as a flirt. When her marriage to her dance teacher ends up on the rocks, she is blamed. Soon after, Miho is sought by the police, then locked up with a bunch of philosophical spongers and shot before she can get back to her boyfriend, who goes to Los Angeles for three months.
