A road movie which leads across modern Egypt. Three on the Road is an interesting mixture of feature and documentary and is about difference faiths and the creeds they entail.Three people ride in a truck from Luxor, in the south of Egypt, to Tanta in the centre of the river delta in the north. Driver Mahmoud is accompanied by the actress Tahia and a 13-year-old boy who wants to visit his mother at Tanta. During the journey the three become entangled in political and religious conflicts in the south of Egypt, where several Koptic Christians have been murdered by fundamentalist Moslems. The journey changes the man into a boy and the boy into a man The contrasts are portrayed metaphorically by El Kalyoubi; they are references to scenes which the Egyptian viewer knows. He has consciously made use of clichés from his country’s film tradition.
