Taipei Story portrays the hectic and labyrinthine capital of Taiwan from the inside. Against the background of contemporary city life, the decay of traditional family life is also shown, with an indirect allusion to major social and political tensions. The fine photography of the moderm city, subtly revealing something of tradition, has received widespread praise. The story is a refreshing and intelligent sketch of how the relationship between a young couple who seem to have everything going for them seems to fall apart. Lon (played by Hou Hsiao-hsien) was once a successful baseball player and now works for a clothing company and his girlfriend Chin is making a career for herself within a computer company. When Lon and Chin become alienated from each other, a moderately-narrated tragedy develops.
