The three March tapes by Sluik/Kurpershoek can be regarded as sections of a larger work which comprises more than just audio-visual products. For instance March feld is also the title of a 1992 installation dedicated to the massacre of the population of the Czech village Lidice by the Nazis in 1942 (an event which is also the subject of the The Silent Village by Humphrey Jennings, also being screened in Rotterdam this year). The videos by Sluik/Kurpershoek demand a contemplative attitude to viewing. They comprise simple, often lengthy and repeated images and are provided with a contrapuntal sound tape. Unlike many experimental works, the tapes by Sluik/Kurpershoek refer directly or indirectly to a historical or political reality, in particular to war.
