This strange tragi-comic film is an updated version of a Ukrainian folk tale which the film-maker has moved to the post-Chernobyl era. The original fairy-tale is about a very poor, old couple. One morning the husband asks his wife to bake bread for him. When she has done so, the loaf of bread jumps out of the window and leaves with the horse and cart. On its journey it meets a wolf, a fox and a bear, all of which are very fond of bread. In the grimmer film version, things are a lot less idyllic.
