After years of writing screenplays and stories, at the age of 65, Dalton Trumbo grabbed the chance to make his début as a director with a film based on a novel he had written thirty years before as an indictment of war. Johnny has fought in the war and been severely wounded. He has no arms and legs any more, nor can he talk, see or hear; basically he can only feel. He is not just a prisoner of his sick bed, but also of his own senses. The film portrays Johnny's story by showing his terrible situation, but also by visualising his thoughts.
