Comrade Chkalov is a fearless socialistic-realist hero. He has limitless faith in the revolution, is strong as a bear and brave as a lion. Chkalov and his team are ordered to go to the North Pole. The heroic comrade has to be the first son of communism to reach the spot. After completing many good deeds, they reach their goal. On the North Pole they find a US flag. When they pull the flag out of the snow, the earth stops revolving, and when they replace it with the Soviet flag, the earth starts turning backwards on its axis. Comrade Chkalov continues on his mission to the United States. There he meets the American proletariate and wins the hearts of American workers. The short, forceful and funny film is a parody of old official Soviet cinematography and a pastiche on Soviet propaganda films. According to Olivier Seguret (Libération) the Russians can carry on make us laugh for generations if they continue like this to mock their own history. He describes director Peyemski as a young Méliès amidst old Soviets.
