The battle between sea and land, which is the subject of Breakers, is reflected in the relationship between a seaman and a woman on land. A young fisherman from Katwijk loses his job and has to find work on land. He wants to get married to his lover and seeks work in the tulip fields, but in vain. The woman has a second candidate, her next-door neighbour, a pawnbroker who also has eyes for her. Lack of money means that the fisherman has to relinquish more and more possessions to the pawnbroker. In the end, she chooses the pawnbroker and the fisherman decides to seek refuge elsewhere.Breakers was shot in the traditional fishing village of Katwijk. Alongside the local population, the natural surroundings of dunes, beaches and sea play a major role.
