One minute you’re messing about with your girlfriend, the next, the police are at your door saying your sister has died in a car crash. It happened to director Peter Hoogendoorn, who made this autobiographically inspired film. In a relay of bad news, protagonist Mike and his girlfriend Katja search, with the police officers, for Mike’s parents. During the car ride, time seems to stand still; the ordinary Rotterdam houses look completely normal, life outside carries on. But the family in the patrol car is in a state of numb shock, represented extremely effectively by long shots that create distance. There is very little talking, the realisation of what has happened gradually seeping through, but not bringing understanding. This leads to awkward situations such as when, after delivering the bad news, the young officer turns to his colleague and asks whether he did it correctly. Between 10 and 12 is a poignant small film about a big topic.
