The Amusement Park

The Amusement Park was for a long time a mystery title in the filmography of George A. Romero, the master who defined Zombie cinema aesthetically and politically like no other auteur. It was considered lost, yet like so much lost, now it is found.

This slightly biblical-sounding phrase fits the film’s origins only too well, as it was produced for an entity called Lutheran Services! They asked Romero whether he could make a long social film about the barbarities modern life has on offer for its senior citizens – certainly not expecting that they’d get a full-blown horror film. But this is exactly what he delivered!

Like all of Romero’s major works, The Amusement Park hollers its message out into the world. It disturbs. It makes you nervous. It makes you want to do something about the outrages witnessed. And it’s not tasteful – you can’t push it away.
