IFFR 2019’s closing film is a sharp thriller featuring Jesse Eisenberg and Alexander Skårsgard as two Wall Street geeks who come up with a bizarre, lucrative plan. All the two smart cousins have to do is run a fibre-optic cable from Kansas to New Jersey, while outsmarting their canny boss. As soon as the project comes to fruition, they can retire from their jobs.
The aim of the plan is to gain a millisecond (the time the titular hummingbird requires to flap its wings) on the data transfer of commercially sensitive information, so obtaining a trading advantage. Vincent becomes embroiled in a logistics nightmare as he tries to convince investors to finance the fibre-optic cable which is plotted to run straight through people’s property, nature reserves, lakes and mountain ranges. This brilliantly acted, hybrid tragicomedy/thriller is mainly about the insanely fast times we live in.
