Through historical film footage from the 1890s to the 1930s, this film addresses contemporary desires and fears around technology and connectedness: predicting the future, increasing efficiency, enriching relationships vs. preserving privacy and dignity; the need for regulation vs the freedom to innovate. ‘Every age thinks it is the modern age,’ the voice-over observes. As a montage film, it is a treasure chest full of striking imagery, in thematic rather than chronological order. Through a mixture of genres (slapstick, documentaries, avant-garde experiments, animated instructions) DREAMS REWIRED attempts to revive the excitement that came with the introduction of the telephone, phonograph, radio, television as well as the earliest machines to make an impressive number of calculations per second: the computer. A genealogy of connectivity.
