Olivier Assayas

Olivier ASSAYAS (1955) is a French director, scriptwriter, and film critic. He was educated at the art academy in Paris and wrote for the prestigious magazine Cahiers du Cinéma. He has also written screenplays and directed several short and feature films, documentaries, and TV productions. In 1986, his feature debut, Disorder, won the critics’ prize in Venice. As well as developing a filmography, Assayas is also working on a bibliography, which includes his book Conversation avec Bergman (1990). Five of his films have already been nominated for a Golden Palm in Cannes, where Personal Shopper (2016) earned him the tied award for Best Director. Assayas is known for his eclectic filmography, consisting of slow-burning period pieces, psychological thrillers, neo-noirs and comedies. Assayas’s latest film, The Wizard of the Kremlin, premiered at the 82nd Venice Film Festival in 2025 and was selected for the IFFR 2026 Limelight programme.
